ICM/Sunday Telegraph poll on Europe

The only poll I've found in the Sunday papers so far is from ICM in the Sunday Telegraph. No sign of voting intention figures yet (they may not have been asked), only questions about the EU.

The poll apparently shows 70% of people in support of the Conservatives offering a referendum on the Lisbon treaty "even if it is already law when they come to power" - not something that should be a huge surprise, I don't think I've ever seen a question in a poll where the public have said they wouldn't want a referendum on something; in polls at least they are invariably higher popular.

There was also a question that found 40% of people wanted to leave the EU, we'll need to look at the wording on that one - it makes a lot of difference and I've seen figures both higher and lower than that depending on what is asked.

(In fact there was a ComRes poll commissioned by UKIP earlier this year that gave a fantastic example of just how much difference. ComRes asked if people agreed with the statement that "Britain should remain a full member of the European Union", and found 55% of people agreed. They then asked the same people if they agreed with the statement "Britain should leave the European Union but maintain close trading links" and, once again, found 55% of people agreed. UKIP naturally highlighted the second question showing a majority wanting to leave the EU, not the first one showing a majority wanting to stay!)
