Younger Voters Least Likely to Still Support Coronavirus Lockdown Measures

With the Telegraph's Lockdown Files bringing Coronavirus decision-making back into the news cycle, PeoplePolling have asked voters for their judgement on the decision to enter a country-wide lockdown. Although all age groups are, by large margins, supportive of lockdown measures, there is a clear stratification by age. As younger voters are far less likely to say holding a lockdown was the correct decision.

There are a number of reasons why this could be the case. The pattern could, in part, be explained by political attention. Young voters also responded "don't know" in higher numbers than other age groups - which otherwise might increase the margin of their support. The fact young voters are generally more liberal, and more likely to support Labour, might also influence their attitude to lockdowns generally, or as imposed by the Conservative government.

Though it could also be explained by the fact young people disproportionately bore the brunt of lockdowns. This is corroborated by prior polling from Ipsos, which spoke of the specific impact of coronavirus measures on young people.
